How can there be a business case for a $35k Golf in the US, but not for a single Avant?

Because you need a crossover to drive Madison to activities, not a wagon.

The greater population (non-Jalops) seem to think an SUV/cross-over is more practical, useful, etc. than a wagon. Hence the extreme lack of wagons in the US at all.

Didn't the CTS-V wagon make up like .5% of all CTS-V sales? Yeah, it's depressing.

I'm guessing it has something to do with more acceptance of hatchbacks rather than wagons

Even better how can VW, Acura, and BMW justify the numbers to have wagons but Audi can't?

And Volvo with the upcoming V60

yup. Hatchback = youthfull college age machine. SUV = grown up responsible machine. Wagon = what, like a station wagon? at least here in the us...things are changing...but not quickly enough.

$34k.

Though to be fair you could spend several grand more than that on a FWD, 200hp automatic Audi A3.

I agree with you though. Audi is fucking stupid.

I like both, but even I would prefer a hatch to a wagon. Of course if we could get some of these over here, the opinions might shift

Brand loyalty, model familiarity and history. Most non-Jalop recognize the familiar VW hatchback. But an Avant? For them, that's the name of a 90's era R&B singer. No, it's not right, but it's how things are.

Are you using the term avant to mean a station wagon?

Golf Station Wagon

Well, ridiculously overpriced small hatchbacks like a fully-loaded Mini Cooper JCW ($40k-$45k) do seem to make business cases, but wagons from automakers with rich wagon heritage, like Volvo, don't make such business cases.

Not quite. That's a hatchback. This is what the mk7 Golf wagon looks like. It will probably be rebadged as a Jetta in the US though, just like they did with previous generations.

No. That is a station wagon.

4 doors + rear hatch = station wagon

Same as in your picture.

No it's not. Really, it's not. It might be in the US, it certainly is not in Europe. The Golf you pictured is a 5 door hatch. The one I pictured the wagon. They're distinctly different, just look at what happens behind the rear wheel. With the hatch there's little rear overhang and there's a shelve in the back. The wagon has quite a lot of rear overhang and there's this sliding canvas on a rail type of thing in the back. Or whatever it's called. No shelve.

Yes, it is. Really.
So the rear overhang is the determining factor? What is the exact number of inches of overhang that differentiates the two?

Kinja'd!!! delete-me-please123 > duurtlang
08/23/2013 at 19:55

Kinja'd!!!0

Wait, so now the interior is the determining factor for the type of car? The little flap that covers the rear stowage area?

Kinja'd!!!1

The CTS-V wagon was more than 200x as successful as it needed to be.

They needed to sell 5 wagons to make a business case for it, and ended up selling over 1200!

Kinja'd!!! duurtlang > delete-me-please123

That must be an American perspective. I've never heard it in Europe. No one, and I really mean no one, would name the 5d Golf a wagon here. Only the Variant is labeled as a wagon. including by manufacturers themselves. There are no exact definitions to what differentiates a hatch from a wagon. It's one of those 'I recognize it when I see it' type of things. But yes, rear overhang does play a part. I consider the Audi A3 Sportback and Opel Signum of those very rare instances where they're somehow halfway in between and a case can be made for both; wagon or hatch. The Golf isn't one of those controversial cara though, far from it.

With what names would you differentiate between the 2 Golfs I posted. A wagon and an extended wagon? As a European this conversation feels very foreign to me.

I wonder why so many Jalops want station wagons?

We get that much, at least. Merc's willing to try to cater to potential customers, which gives audi even less of an excuse not to try.

Serious answer to troll question:
It's not about a set number of inches, because cars come in different sizes. It's about proportions.

A wagon is about the same length or longer than the equivalent sedan, AND has significant cargo volume behind the rear seats above the waist, i.e. an overall roofline that ends higher than the equivalent sedan's and near the rear of the car.

A hatchback is about the same length or shorter than the equivalent sedan; if about the same length, the roofline is like a sedan or fastback.

Wagons tend to less-than-double cargo floor length when folding the rear seats; hatchbacks tend to more-than-double it.
